A happy job or a meaningful job: which path will you take?

According to Harvard Business Review (HBR), on average an employee will spend 90,000 hours at work. Emily Esfahani Smith, editor of HBR asserted in her writing: “make work more meaningful to employees is the most optimal approach to increase productivity, engagement as well as quality of work.”

HBR stated “happiness” describes a momentary pleasure, which does not last eternally. A happy job would be satisfying, because we are doing what we like. On the contrary, a meaningful job is more sustainable, as it brings more than one kind of happiness and diversify your experience of emotion.

“Choosing a happy or a meaningful job depends on you. If happiness is the priority goal, then you are more likely to give up amid difficulties. However, if you ready to “chill” in the following 90,000 hours, you are going to experience meaningful job. Such job can bring failure and invisible pressure, nevertheless it empowers emotion and enriches mind set. Life is not tender and simple, so is work!”, shared by Ms. Tieu Yen Trinh, CEO of Talentnet.

Passively seeking for happiness: a one-way road to no “happy ending”!

Based on “Face of Depression” report of Philip Burguieres, 50% CEO have faced severe emotional issues. Leaders face invisible pressure like responsibility with subordinates, and more complex assignments. The sense of happiness is a two ways road. “Bad ending” is when your pursuit for happiness without offer happiness to your leaders.

“Even leaders cannot always ask for happiness in work if they do not have an appropriate way of work or connection with their employees. Therefore, rather than ask for happiness, employees should find meaning in their jobs and interaction with leaders. Follow sustainable emotion is the way to attain valuable achievement.”, summed up by Ms. Trinh.
